The Brainstorming Session on the Urgent Issues of Peace and Security

For the past three years, countries in Africa have faced a resurgence of coups (Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger), the occurrence of which has reminded us of the institutional weaknesses that are a reality for many African states.  These attempts to seize power through unconstitutional means have occurred against a backdrop of mounting security challenges due to the growing threat of terrorism, a difficult post-covid economic context characterised by high inflation and low growth, but also growing dissatisfaction with mainstream politics on the part of Africa’s increasingly youthful, and connected population.

It’s in this context that Afrika Nunya organised the "Brainstorming Meeting on the Urgent Challenges of Peace and Security in Africa" which brought together 26 national and international high-level experts from 20 African countries to discuss the theme "What Homegrown Solutions are Required to Meet the Democratic Governance, Peace and Security Challenges Facing Africa?”. The meeting took place on August 27 and 28, 2023 at the Hôtel du 2 Février in Lomé, Togo.

The participants during discussions held around a palaber tree format, discussed the current state of governance in Africa; assessed the strengths and weaknesses of regional organizations in conflict prevention, management and resolution; and outlined proposals for more effective preventive diplomacy strategies and mediation tools.

The experts invited to this meeting brought a wealth of knowledge and a diversity of experiences to address the challenges facing the continent and made a number of recommendations to help Africa on its path to consolidating peace through building authentic, sustainable, inclusive and balanced democratic models.
